Spicy Black Bean Burgers

I was a little bit panicked while I was making these.

Who am I, really!?  Thinking I could make black bean burgers!?  Preposterous!

Beef.  It’s what I do.  It’s what I know.  I cook beef.

Well, move over moo cow.  You’ve got some competition.  {Bessie is mooing with delight as we speak}

I could almost turn vegetarian with these.  They are seriously that good.  But…nothing quite compares to a burger dripping with juice straight from the grill.  Oh my gosh what am I saying.  Stay focused.

I say these have a nice kick to them.  Mr would say, “What kick?  Where’s the hot sauce.”  I am the whimp of all whimps when it comes to spicy foods so if you are in the same boat you won’t have a problem.

Make these tonight.  You won’t be sorry.

A few tricks I learned while making these.  First of all, they won’t shrink so make them bun size or slightly smaller.  Second, don’t cook them in too much oil or they could become soggy {ewwww}.  Third, thick is good.

I served these with a special sauce I whipped up.  6 oz plain greek yogurt, 3 tblsp salsa, and 1 tsp chipotle chili powder {I LOVE this stuff get some like yesterday}

  1. Black bean burgers are my favorite. I would be vegetarian if not for my husband (and the occasional red meat craving!) Your burgers sound delicious, I’ll have to give them a try!

  2. how much bread crumbs do you use?

  3. Awesome! Black bean burgers are my first choice when I’m trying to cut down on the red meat. Much better than the veggie burger like Boca brand. Although that’s not bad either, but the black bean version is more stout in texture!

  4. I lurve black beans so I’ll have to give these a go. And guess what total heat whimp over here too ; ) Ah, if only we all had the gift of heat that Fuji Mama has… xoxo

    • Isn’t Fuji Mama amazing!? In high school she would drink the leftover salsa when we got burritos. Back then I didn’t use any. Now I hardly use a whole container on one! I don’t know how she does it. 😉 xo

  5. Way to go, these look delicious and I will make them. Ive made many veggie burgers but never with black beans. I like that sauce too. Better than beef, I think. Have a great weekend.

  6. These Black Bean Burgers look out of this world. I don’t eat meat so bean burgers are my burger of choice. I’ve got to try your version 🙂

  7. Tammy Ireland says:

    We aren’t vegetarian but there are times when we are craving something but can’t put our finger on it. Somehow Ithink these will satisfy that craving. Thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to try them.

  8. You just reminded me how much I need to make some meatless burgers 🙂

  9. Just made these tonight on a thin bun with a little miracle whip and tomato slice

  10. I’m a sucker for a good bean burger. Your special sauce sounds amazing, too!

  11. i love love bean burgers, well, are the only burgers I eat but still, I love them! Gotta try your version too!

  12. Hey Krista! These look great! I love the sauce too! It looks like a healthier version of a fry sauce. Happy New Year! It was so nice meeting you again at the Foodbuzz Festival!

    • It totally reminds me of fry sauce! I hadn’t thought of that! It was SO great meeing you too! Imagine, having to go all the way to San Fran to meet! xo

  13. These look incredible. I am a meat gal but I would gladly give it up for one of these. So tasty and juicy looking.
