Get Movin’ – A 5K Challenge

We are gonna do things a little different today.

It’s not ALL about the food, ya know!?

Okay.  It is.  But that’s why I run.  Or at least attempt to run which does turn into hitting the snooze button over and over again more times than I can count or the occasional stroll on the treadmill instead of a run.

After the birth of my third son I had the sudden urge to just do it.  Run, that is.  Nike does have a point.  Fortunately, I found a training partner and we were off to a great start.  My body was getting toned, I had more confidence, and, best of all, I felt good.

After that short season of training I ran my first 10K.  That’s just over 6 miles.  Yeah, I know.  It freaks me out too and it’s totally awesome!

Shortly after completing that race I became pregnant with our fourth son.  With that came another mouth to feed and a lot more crazy in the best way possible.  Since then I haven’t been as dedicated to training as I’d like to be.  In fact, that snooze button is getting quite a lot of action as of late.

I’ve been struggling to find the motivation and time but that needs to change.  I WANT that runner back.  Heck, I’d settle for speed walker at this point.

Then opportunity knocked.  And I answered.

I happened to “over hear” a conversation on Twitter a few weeks back between a fabulous group of women that I’ve admired from afar.

Cindy, Once Upon a LoafAmy, She Wears Many HatsKristen, Dine & DishBridget, Bake at 350Lori, Recipe GirlIn Katrina’s KitchenRobyn, Add a PinchCarolyn, All Day I Dream About FoodShawn, I Wash…You DryDara, Cookin’ Canuck

So what do I do?  Completely interrupt and announce that I would love to join them in their quest for health and kicking the pavement’s trash.

Not only are we going to kick the pavement’s trash come September 8th but we are going to do it in style.  After all, there’s a little Wonder Woman in all of us.  We are going to cross the finish line proudly with our capes flapping in the wind behind us.

We want YOU {finger pointing} to join us!

Training starts now.  The end goal?  To run a 5K on September 8th.  There are a couple resources online where you can find local races, Active. com and Running in the, and Dara has a wonderful guest post from Cindy today with all the motivation you need to get started.

So what do you think?  Want to join this merry band of Red Faced Runners for our 5K challenge!?  Of course you do!  Be sure to follow along on Twitter at #RFR5K and join the community on Facebook at Red Faced Runners Challenge!

For me running is all about the mind game.  Yes, you do need to be in some sort of shape to run but you have to start with your mantra first.  If you tell yourself “it’s too hard” or “I couldn’t possibly make it that far” then you are absolutely right.  Buuuuutttt, if you say to yourself “I’m gonna run to that corner, then I can stop” it suddenly doesn’t seem too difficult.  Once you get to that corner you might just say “I made it to this corner, how ’bout the next corner.”  Before you know it you’ve run a mile.

Do that just once and see how you feel.  You will feel so good about yourself you will want to do it again…I promise.  Go hit the pavement and come back to tell me all about it!

  1. I’m so fun to be doing this with you. You’re so right about the mental game of, “I’ll just run to the next corner…” I’ve done that so many times and it’s carried me through my runs.

    • Thank you so much for including me! I’m not quite up to your speed yet but I WILL be. When that happens it’s marathon time together!

  2. What an awesome group! I recently became a runner 6 months ago and it’s so amazing as to how good you feel after a run!

  3. This is a pretty amazing group…and I still can’t quite grasp the concept that I’m in a RUNNING group. What the HECK?!? so happy to be running WITH you September 8th! 😉

  4. I’m soooo glad you joined in! Love your inspirational/ kick it up a notch attitude!!! 🙂

    • Thanks Robyn! I can’t believe my luck and the timing. I had just met Dara at Camp Blogaway and when I saw what you ladies were scheming I just knew I wanted in. Thanks for including me!

  5. Love running!! Hubby and I just started back over 5 weeks ago with Couch to 5K after almost a 4 year hiatus from running (birth of 3rd child). Oh well…there were starts and stops, but a lot more stops and inaction. We are now on week 6 of training, and feeling GREAT!! You’re right how awesome you feel after a run.

Hubby got inspired watching me complete my first 5K back in 2004, and he went on to run several marathons and complete a half-ironman triathlon. Now we are both back to square run at the same time which is cool!

We’re scheduled to run a 5K together August 18th. So I’m definitely joining in with you guys but will have already run my 5K by Sept 8th. I am starting to set my sights on running either a 10K in Oct or Nov. Bottom line ~ Fitness…and I’m so glad to be a part of this accountability group. Thanks!!

    • That’s great Denise!! So glad to have apart of the group. I’m so much better at getting it done when I have friends checking up on me.

  6. Will you be wearing those awesome socks during the 5k? I think those will power you through any rough patches!!
    Good luck and have fun!!

    • You better believe it Meg! And since my aspirations for completing a half marathon in June were shot by a series of events that left me completely drained this is just what I need. I think those socks will be joining me on a few more races!

  7. It is totally a mental game some days. WHen I tell myself I can’t…well, I don’t 🙁

  8. Put me in coach, I’m ready to play!!! I’m currently training in Vibram Five Fingers, so I call being spiderwomen!!

I really love this challenge and would truly love to join. Running has been my saving grace with all these cookies in my house.

    • I hear ya! A cookie a day is genius so running would be a necessity for me. 1 cookie for each mile! 😉 Welcome!!! So excited to have you join the challenge! It’s gonna keep me in check.

  9. Woo hoo! So glad we’re all doing this together! It’s going to be so much fun.

  10. Look at you! Congratulations on your training!

  11. Count me in! I wish we lived closer, running together would be fun! But we can always text and run at the same time… hehe

  12. I just wanted to say that I love your Wonder Woman socks 🙂 They are so awesome!

I have some tips on my blog for new runners and hot weather running. You can find them here:

(I’m new to blogging so if I can’t post links here, I apologize. Feel free to delete them).

  13. Agreed, total mind game!!! I am always talking myself out of it, then it becomes too hard, and then the elliptical burns just as many calories & is less painful etc etc etc!!! I’m queen of excuses when it comes to running.

This morning I knew I was going to the gym, but I never planned on running till I started seeing all of your cute #rfr5k faces popping up. Goal was 3 miles run with walk breaks…ended up doing 4.25 because it just felt good! You girls totally kicked my butt into gear & I thank you!

    • Yay! You killed it Aggie! This is just an amazing group of women. The only reason I didn’t sleep in this morning (despite going to bed way too late) was because I knew they would be “waiting”. I can’t even tell you how exciting it is to have all of you RFR’s to support me!

  14. I just started running with my friend, our first 5k is next weekend! I think I’ll survive it 🙂 Then we are pushing ourselves to finish a 10k in September #RFR5K all the way!
