]]> If you have or work in a business that uses any type of electrical equipment, you may have wondered at some point whether or not you were able to test and tag all of your own equipment or not?  While the answer is yes you can, you may also be surprised to discover that testing and tagging your very own electrical equipment is actually not a second-rate option by any means.  In fact, when you do decide that you are going to test and tag your own electrical equipment, it can help to increase the amount of electrical safety within that particular workplace, as well as even have the potential to save you some very serious money in the long run.  Here is what you need to know about testing and tagging your own electrical equipment.

What is Required to Test and Tag Equipment?

When it comes to the task of doing a test and tag on any electrical equipment that you may be using in your workplace, you are not really going to require any special electrical qualifications, as the process of doing a test and tag on any type of portable electrical equipment is not going to be considered a ‘prescribed’ activity.  With that being said, you are going to require a few things in order to be able to test your own appliances says Electrical Testing Services.  Those requirements include:

  • Competency training and assessment:  this means that you will need to have some type of training and assessment under your belt before you are able to get started with a test and tag on any type of electrical appliances, not just a simple ‘product training’ from the person who sold you the testing equipment.
  • Auditable and accountable records:  this is required for every electrical appliance that you did a test and tag on.
  • The right testing equipment that any ‘Competent Person’ is able to use:  the most popular testing equipment that has been designed for a ‘Competent Person’ to use is going to be the PAT Testers.
  • Some type of testing system:  this will need to pass any auditing that may be done by the WorkCover/OSH purposes.
  • Ongoing back up and support

While it is no big secret that every single workplace is going to be a unique one, it also means that each testing package is going to need to be completely different as well.  With that being said, when you get a training package and testing equipment for your particular workplace, it is going to need to be suited to best fit what your company’s individual requirements are.

While there is no previous knowledge of the electrical system is going to be required in order to participate in any type of training course for test and tag, you should be sure that you get an individual assessment completed as soon as you have gone through all of your training, and before you actually go out and try to complete a test and tag in the workplace.
