Birthdays in my family are kinda a big deal. I grew up close to a large extended family so I was a bit, shall we say, spoiled growing up! We celebrated monthly birthdays surrounded by family, good food, and best of all, dessert! I have fond memories of those celebrations and as a mother I want my children to make their own memories. For me, creating those memories starts in the kitchen. Okay, everything starts in the kitchen for me!
A few weeks ago my son turned 5 and a couple of days before I started asking him about the type of cake he would like me to make him. After all, other than the birthday boy, the cake is the center of attention! I really love the fact that he said chocolate and never wavered. Not only did he want a chocolate cake but he also wanted chocolate frosting…I have taught him well!
I wanted a moist cake that wasn’t too sweet. I have often heard about cakes made with sour cream and thought that would make a wonderfully moist cake. I found this Sour Cream Chocolate Cake from All Recipes and I think it is one of my favorites. To shake things up a bit I added vanilla buttercream between the layers. It was moist, not too sweet, and most importantly, my son loved it!
